THE IMPORTANCE OF TRAINING WITH INFOR EAM

Targeted Training is the Best

For some unimaginable reason, training seems to be the first task reduced or cut from project plans. This illogical move is understandable – software needs a lot of technical attention, including installation, custom report development, and even system integration.

An untrained workforce cannot make use of even the most well-crafted software packages.

Infor EAM is no different from any other enterprise software package – one designed for wide deployment – in that everyone who has a stake in the software needs some level of training.

End-user training must be held as a priority in any project plan.

Infor EAM Asset Form

Consultants at EAM Solutions have extensive experience analyzing training needs, as well as designing and delivering core curriculum.

We take the approach of first talking with end-users and reviewing project requirements, and then developing training materials. General training may be okay for application administrators, but groups of end-users only need to learn what’s expected for their job roles.

Adult learners also absorb information differently than the average fifth grader, which seems to be the model for a lot of computer classes. Training must include real-world examples, input from students in building these examples, and follow-up with practical application and solutions to real problems.

Within the deployment of Infor EAM, different types of training may happen at different phases:

HOW TO USE A PERSONAL COMPUTER

One overlooked facet of training in an Infor EAM project is basic computer literacy. Before you start the project, take a quick survey to make sure your end-users know how to use Windows, web browsers, and basic office software. Many maintenance and operations workers have been neglected in corporate training initiatives, and during the project will be very resistant to Infor EAM and other enterprise software.

Through basic computer literacy training, you will build a stronger workforce that won’t be surprised by new software applications - and one that can better manage change.

Training in a software deployment project must include certain touchpoints:

You also must consider the best form of supplemental materials for each group to be trained, whether extensive training manuals, or simple cheat sheets attached to monitors with Velcro.

AN UNTRAINED WORKFORCE CANNOT MAKE USE OF EVEN THE MOST

WELL-CRAFTED SOFTWARE PACKAGES.

TRAINING FOR ANY OCCASION

A one-size-fits-all training plan will fail to reach all of your end-users. You need to take into account subject, situation, and availability.

Classroom training is great for groups learning a wide range of topics, and who need group interaction to help reinforce concepts. This also requires a significant amount of time away from daily job tasks, as well as a classroom.

Small group training in the workplace is good for targeted topics, such as “closing work orders”, and can be done with a handful of people around a single computer. This is limited to about an hour of training.

One-to-one training is great for system users who can’t get away from daily tasks, and who may have specific questions about the software.

Web-based training is good for reaching participants in a distributed environment, but after an hour, interest drops off - and so do the students.

Lecture style training is the least effective because students cannot actively participate in the training, a prerequisite for learning.

You will also need to designate a “system champion” or someone in your company’s training group to lead the training effort.

Consultant-led training is terrific, but you want your group to be independent and able to onboard new employees or end-users without having to call for outside help.

When you make training a priority and set in place an overall training plan, Infor EAM becomes a part of your company’s learning culture.
